Remember how I made a Zelda doll for last year’s Abunai? And after Abunai I kept crying that I didn’t keep any notes because I was in a rush, and how stupid that was? Well, I finally got around to redesigning her. :)
The basics are still the same as the previous version, with just some tiny changes of things that bothered me. One of my biggest annoyances was something most people probably won’t even notice: her overskirt or whatever you call it; the purple bit around her hips. In the old version it was a weirdly shaped sort of rectangle that bunched up really weird around her waist. I knew why that happened – rectangles don’t really drape well over conical shapes – but I didn’t have the time to figure out the exact shape it needed to be and calculate how to crochet that.
But this time I did! Turns out it had to be a sort of heart shape, and since heart shapes are pretty well documented in shawl knitting I looked at some basic shawl knitting instructions for reference, translated it into crochet, and made a teeny-tiny version of it. It now fits perfectly around her waist and looks quite presentable in the back too:
Another thing I did completely differently is her circlet, which, if I recall correctly, was a completely last-minute work last year and therefore not exactly optimal. It’s a bit thinner now and slightly higher up on her forehead, with some extra shaping at the sides. I know the actual circlet she wears in-game is a lot more ornate and has all sorts of spikes and curls and fidgety things, but I wanted to keep some of my sanity so I just kept the shape pretty simplified.
All in all, I’m pretty damn happy with this end result. :) And the best part: I actually wrote down everything I did this time. I’ve been getting some questions about this doll and if I’ll ever release a pattern for it, and now I’m one step closer to actually being able to do that. It will still take a while since I’ll have to make another doll to take progress photos for the pattern, but at least the design work is done now. ♥
